You have to wait patiently for God’s timing, and in the waiting time God will do his work in your heart and life. He will develop you and mature you and enlarge you. He will never allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able to bear.

Proverbs 19:11 says a man’s wisdom gives him patience, and wisdom says: I’m not going to get off course. I’m not going to grumble and complain. I’m going to keep my focus on God and the things of God.

That is what Job did for most of that year of extreme suffering. Even when his friends told him to give up, to blame God or believe he was doing something wrong, Job chose to be patient. He chose to be wise. He knew that even when we can’t feel God or see him at work or hear his voice, God still is with us. He is still watching. He is still directing our steps, when we choose to take each of those steps with a patient faith.

That is the real race that the Bible talks about, the one you take with each patient step. The Bible says to run with perseverance the race that is marked out for you. Don’t quit—run and finish. No one else can do that for you. Only you can run your race. Only you can claim the prize, the promise God has planned with your name on it. And God is with you in the race. He stays with you and in you and for you. He has even hemmed you in, both behind you and before you. He’s got you covered.
