If you live long enough, you know life will try to steal your confidence in God. Things happen that you never dream. Tragedy strikes. Bombs go off. Loves are lost. Health issues arise. Dreams die.
In the midst of problems, through every trial, you are tempted to give up on your dreams, to give up on yourself, to give up on God. The hurdles to believing seem too high. The cost seems too much. You must give up control you never had. You must believe God will work all things to your benefit. You must do all this even though the timing seems bad and the way is dark or unclear, even when you think things will never change, even when you feel trapped in your situation, even when you think: How can any good ever come to pass?
That is because God has a plan. He is at work for you. He is for you. He wants you to hang on because he’s preparing something good, and sometimes it takes some doing to bring about: some work in you and around you, some things you may never see or know.
No matter. God is still at work in you and in this world to fulfill his Word. The Bible tells us that this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us, and if we know that he hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
That’s the kind of unshakable confidence we can have in God.
